Internal Control Officer

About the role

The Internal Control Officer supports Lightway Microfinance Bank’s first line of defence, ensuring daily operational compliance with CBN, NDIC and internal policies. The role involves reviewing transactions, loan files and branch processes to prevent issues from reaching audit or regulators.

Key responsibilities

• Perform daily and weekly pre‑ and post‑transaction checks on cash, teller, deposit and loan activities against approved limits and documentation.
• Review loan files for completeness before and after disbursement, flagging missing or irregular documents.
• Conduct spot checks, cash counts, vault inspections and till balancing across branches.
• Monitor compliance with CBN regulatory limits and internal approval authorities.
• Support AML/CFT controls by reviewing large or unusual transactions and reporting suspicious activity.
• Track and resolve audit and examiner findings, preparing control reports and exception logs for senior management.
• Investigate irregularities, fraud red flags or policy breaches and document findings for escalation.
• Maintain and update internal control checklists in line with regulatory guidelines.

Required profile

• BSc/HND in Accounting, Banking & Finance, Economics or related field; professional certification (ICAN, ACCA, CIBN, CIA) is a plus.
• 1–5 years relevant experience in internal control, audit, compliance or bank operations.
• Working knowledge of CBN prudential guidelines, NDIC requirements and basic AML/CFT concepts.
• Strong attention to detail, sound judgement and high integrity.
• Willingness to travel to branches as needed.

Required skills

• Proficient in Excel (formulas, basic reconciliation).
• Ability to use or quickly learn a core banking application such as BankOne.
