Legal Officer – Contracts & IP Specialist

About the role

Softseer Ltd is seeking a proactive Legal Officer to support its operations in Lagos. The role focuses on contract management, intellectual property, data privacy, and technology‑related legal matters, working closely with product teams and external counsel. You will act as the primary legal point of contact for internal stakeholders and ensure that all business activities adhere to applicable laws and regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, negotiate and provide legal advice on a wide range of contracts, service agreements, partnership agreements, letters, notices and other legal documents to protect the company’s interests.
• Develop and implement intellectual property strategies, advising on copyrights, trademarks, patents and related enforcement actions.
• Coordinate with external lawyers, solicitors, barristers, government agencies, regulators and other authorities, representing the company in legal matters.
• Monitor and ensure compliance with global data‑privacy regulations such as GDPR, CCPA and local Nigerian data protection laws.
• Support product development teams by providing legal guidance on open‑source software usage, third‑party integrations and licensing requirements.
• Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.
• Work closely with external counsel on litigation, regulatory investigations and complex transactional matters.
• Create, update and maintain internal policies covering ethics, compliance, contract management and corporate governance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Law, Business, or a related field.
• Minimum of 1 year of hands‑on experience in a legal role, preferably within the technology or telecommunications sector.
• Strong analytical abilities, attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
