Volunteer Therapist / Counselor (Full‑time, Owerri)

About the role

The Volunteer Therapist/Counselor will deliver direct mental‑health support to individuals and groups at HealthPlanet Foundation’s Owerri centre. This full‑time, on‑site position involves assessment, counseling, peer‑support facilitation and psychoeducational workshops aimed at building emotional resilience and stress‑management skills.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct intake assessments and provide one‑to‑one counseling sessions using evidence‑based approaches.
• Facilitate peer‑support groups and lead workshops on emotional resilience, coping strategies and stress management.
• Maintain accurate, confidential client records and ensure ethical handling of sensitive information.
• Collaborate with other mental‑health professionals, volunteers and community partners to design and refine interventions.
• Identify emerging community needs, refer participants to appropriate services and support outreach and awareness activities.

Required profile

• Relevant mental‑health training (degree or certification in psychology, counseling, social work or related field) or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience delivering individual or group counseling with evidence‑based methods such as CBT, person‑centered or solution‑focused techniques.
• Strong communication, active listening and empathy, with ability to build trust across diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and maintain professional boundaries.
• Comfort facilitating workshops or support groups and presenting mental‑health topics clearly.
• Organizational skills for managing caseloads, documentation and scheduling in a resource‑limited setting.
• Commitment to mental‑health advocacy, cultural humility and continuous learning.

Required skills
