Senior Registrar Cardiothoracic Surgery

About the role

The Senior Registrar Cardiothoracic Surgery provides advanced surgical care for patients with complex cardiac disease. Working under consultant supervision, the role combines operative duties, intensive post‑operative management, teaching, and research within a high‑volume cardiac centre.

Key responsibilities

• Perform and first‑assist in major cardiac procedures such as CABG, valve repair/replacement, aortic surgery and congenital corrections.
• Lead the operating‑room team, enforce aseptic technique, conduct safety time‑outs and manage intra‑operative emergencies.
• Oversee intensive care management, including hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator support, inotropes, ECMO and postoperative complication handling.
• Provide 24/7 on‑call emergency cardiac surgery coverage and coordinate handovers.
• Supervise, teach and evaluate junior residents, fellows and surgical assistants.
• Design and conduct clinical research, enroll patients in trials, and present findings at conferences.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MBBS, MD, MBChB or equivalent) and full registration to practice as a Specialist Registrar/Senior Resident.
• Completed residency in Cardiothoracic or Cardiac Surgery with proven competence in adult cardiac operations.
• Experience in cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO and critical care management.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in high‑stakes environments.

Required skills

• Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valve surgery techniques.
• Aortic and congenital cardiac surgical procedures.
• Cardiopulmonary bypass circuit management and ECMO support.
• Interpretation of postoperative echocardiograms and chest X‑rays.
• Intra‑Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) insertion and management.
• Critical care skills: hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, inotrope titration.
