Principal Mobile Engineer (POS Terminal)

About the role

Moniepoint, Africa's all-in-one financial platform and Nigeria's largest merchant acquirer, is looking for a Principal Mobile Engineer (POS Terminal) to design and lead the architecture of its POS terminal solutions. The role ensures the scalability, security, performance and reliability of POS systems and related applications, including mobile apps for repair scheduling and maintenance. Most terminals are currently Android Native, but cross-platform expertise (Flutter, C, JavaScript) is crucial as the portfolio expands.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and architecture of POS terminal solutions, ensuring security, scalability, performance and integration with hardware and payment systems.
• Develop and maintain architectural documents and diagrams for POS terminal systems.
• Make architectural decisions on POS software, integrating payment technologies and EMV standards while ensuring hardware compatibility.
• Lead the development of POS-related applications and optimize performance and security, especially around payment processing and EMV protocols.
• Take part in planning sessions with product and engineering teams so solutions meet market needs and business goals.
• Conduct code reviews and define and enforce software engineering best practices across the POS and related teams.
• Ensure the stability and reliability of POS products by monitoring performance and troubleshooting.
• Mentor engineers and help screen candidates for the engineering team.

Required profile

• At least 8 years of experience in system design, architecture and development, specifically in the POS terminal domain.
• Strong knowledge of EMV security protocols, including chip-based transactions, encryption and key management.
• Experience integrating hardware such as card readers, PIN pads and printers into POS devices.
• Deep understanding of payment systems architecture, including integration with payment processors and gateways.
• Knowledge of software quality assurance principles applied in financial systems.
• Excellent problem-solving, communication and leadership skills, with the ability to mentor engineers and drive process improvements.

Required skills

• Android Native development (Java/Kotlin)
• Cross-platform mobile development such as Flutter (a plus)
• Familiarity with other POS platforms such as C and JavaScript (a plus)
