Health Care Aide – Direct Client Care

About the role

The Health Care Aide provides direct client care and environmental support, ensuring clients maintain dignity, independence and optimal health within established standards. Working under the direction of a team leader, the aide assists with daily living activities, follows individualized care plans and documents observations.

Key responsibilities

• Assist clients with personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, oral care and skin care according to care plans.
• Support clients with elimination, continence care, ostomy management and urinary drainage systems.
• Provide mobility assistance, safe feeding, and encourage participation in nutrition and activity programs.
• Measure and record vital signs, intake/output, weight and other observations, reporting changes to the team leader.
• Apply and manage medical equipment such as compression stockings, braces, oxygen therapy, suction drains and medication creams.
• Maintain a clean, safe environment, handle linens, supplies, and ensure infection‑control practices.
• Document care accurately in health records and flow sheets, and follow restraint and safety policies when required.

Required profile

• Health Care Aide Certificate from a recognized program (or equivalent education/experience).
• Strong organizational ability and capacity to work independently.
• Effective communication skills and flexibility to adapt techniques and procedures.
• Sound judgment, respect for cultural diversity and confidentiality.
• Consistent attendance and ability to perform duties regularly.

Required skills

• Vital sign measurement and documentation.
• Oxygen therapy administration.
• Compression stocking, brace and splint application.
• Suction system handling (e.g., Hemovac, Jackson‑Pratt drains).
• Medication safety for topical creams and ointments.
