Payroll Officer

About the role

The ECOWAS Commission is seeking a Payroll Officer to manage the full payroll cycle, ensure accurate salary payments, and support financial operations for staff in Abuja, Nigeria. This position plays a critical role in maintaining payroll integrity and compliance with organizational policies.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct yearly salary reviews, including annual increments.
• Develop and maintain a database for payroll, pensions, benefits, and allowances.
• Prepare and oversee monthly staff salaries and related emoluments.
• Review and approve staff-related expenditures such as medical and educational refunds.
• Analyze financial records and provide data to senior management for operational improvements.
• Supervise payroll returns, including provident and other deductions, ensuring timely payments.
• Implement budgetary controls and verify that expenditures align with approved budgets.
• Safeguard payroll and personnel records.
• Review, certify, and forward financial documents like invoices and payment requests.
• Supervise support staff, ensure document accuracy, and provide training on financial regulations.
• Prepare employee contracts and temporary staff salary arrangements in line with agreements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a financial discipline (higher degree reduces experience requirement).
• Minimum five years of professional experience in payroll or finance (three years if higher degree held).
• Age not exceeding 50 years at recruitment.
• Fluency in English; French or Portuguese knowledge is an advantage.

• Computer literacy.
