Legal Adviser and Company Secretary

About the role

The British Council in Nigeria is seeking a senior Legal Adviser and Company Secretary to provide strategic legal, governance and regulatory leadership. The role will support the Board, Country Director and senior leadership team, ensuring compliance with Nigerian law, corporate governance standards and data protection regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Act as principal legal adviser to the Board and senior leadership, delivering commercial and risk‑based advice across corporate, commercial, employment, intellectual property, regulatory and operational matters.
• Coordinate internal and external legal counsel, manage litigation, disputes, investigations and regulatory enquiries.
• Serve as Company Secretary for British Council entities in Nigeria, organising Board and Annual General Meetings and advising directors on statutory duties and governance.
• Function as Nigeria Data Protection Officer, ensuring compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act and delivering data‑protection awareness training.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal partners and external stakeholders to support integrated delivery of business objectives.

Required profile

• Qualified legal practitioner with active membership of the Nigerian Bar Association.
• LL.B degree, Barrister at Law (B.L.) and call to bar certificate from the Nigerian Law School.
• NYSC certificate.
• Proven experience advising boards or senior leadership teams and overseeing risk management and compliance.
• Strong organisational, problem‑solving and confidentiality skills.
