Special Educational Needs Coordinator

About the role

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is seeking Nigerian nationals for a Special Educational Needs Coordinator position at its headquarters in Ibadan. The post is on a 3-year renewable contract and focuses on inclusion and learning support within the school.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and manage the school's Inclusion and Learning Support Department.
• Identify, assess and track students with special educational needs, learning difficulties or gifted/talented requirements.
• Develop, implement and regularly review Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or Student Support Plans with teachers and parents.
• Maintain a confidential SEND register and keep compliance documentation up to date.
• Collect and interpret assessment data to monitor progress and raise achievement targets.
• Work with classroom and subject teachers to adapt curricula and differentiate instruction.
• Coach and train Teaching Assistants and general education teachers on inclusive best practices.
• Advise the Head of School and Director of Studies on resource allocation, budgeting and intervention needs.
• Act as the main point of contact for families of vulnerable or neurodivergent students and coordinate external specialists such as educational psychologists when needed.

Required profile

• Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Psychology or a related field.
• Internationally recognized qualification or training in SEND or school counseling.
• At least five years of experience as a SEND Coordinator, Learning Support Teacher or School Counselor.
• Prior experience in an International Baccalaureate or international school setting; experience in a multi-cultural or developing-country context is an added advantage.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.

Required skills

• Strong ICT skills, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office and school database systems.
• High level of empathy, discretion, confidentiality and cross-cultural communication.
