Research Leader (Mathematics) - Remote Contract

About the role

This is a remote contract position as a pod lead for mathematics, described as Terminal Bench Science. The role reviews mathematical tasks created by trainers, mentors them and works with stakeholders to improve benchmark quality. It is paid $15-$28 per hour and requires a commitment of 10 to 40 hours per week.

Key responsibilities

• Review trainer-created tasks for mathematical correctness and reproducibility
• Verify the convergence, stability and error handling of mathematical tasks
• Ensure tasks promote genuine multi-step reasoning and appropriate computation
• Design graders based on mathematical properties and check for optimality certificates
• Provide feedback and track trainer revisions to ensure quality
• Mentor and onboard trainers in task design and coding practices
• Collaborate with stakeholders to enhance benchmark quality

Required profile

• Ph.D., postdoctoral experience or equivalent in mathematics or a related field
• Experience mentoring or leading technical or research teams
• Ability to evaluate algorithms, proofs and computational results rigorously
• Strong communication skills to give constructive feedback

Required skills

• Strong programming in Python, Julia, C/C++ and MATLAB/Octave
• Proficiency in Linux and terminal usage for scientific computing
• Experience with numerical methods, optimization and mathematical modeling
