Product Design Lead

About the role

Chowdeck is an on-demand delivery service for Africa delivering food, medicine, groceries and other packages. As Product Design Lead, you will lead product design across customer, vendor, operations and trust products, reporting to the Product Executive and coordinating with other functional teams. This is a player-coach role: you will lead and develop designers, build stronger systems and still take part in important product problems.

Key responsibilities

• Own the quality and coherence of product experiences across customer and internal surfaces.
• Lead the design team, including hiring, coaching, performance support and allocation across product teams.
• Define product design principles, critique standards and decision quality.
• Build and maintain the design system and reusable interaction patterns.
• Run critiques, coach designers through discovery, interaction design, prototyping and delivery, and partner with functional leads early in problem definition.
• Improve how customer research and operational insight feed into product decisions.
• Plan design capacity, spot hiring needs and ensure priority teams get the right support.

Required profile

• At least 6-7 years of product design experience, including at least 2 years leading, managing or mentoring designers and raising team quality.
• Strong experience designing complex mobile and web products, with a portfolio showing process and decisions.
• Experience partnering with other functions from discovery through launch.
• Ability to move between strategy, detailed critique and hands-on design, with clear communication and the ability to give direct feedback.

Bonus points

• Experience designing for marketplaces, commerce, logistics, fintech or operational tools.
• Experience establishing or scaling a design system.
• Experience building a research practice or improving design operations in a growing company.
