Nutrition Officer (Health & Nutrition Programme)

About the role

The Nutrition Officer will support the implementation and monitoring of nutrition programmes in Borno, Nigeria. Working under the Nutrition Coordinator, the officer will ensure quality screening, referral and treatment of children under five, promote optimal feeding practices and contribute to community‑based malnutrition management.

Key responsibilities

• Support quality screening of children 6‑59 months and ensure referral pathways are functional.
• Promote and protect optimal Maternal, Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices, including IYCF‑Emergency.
• Identify and train lead mothers, health workers and community volunteers.
• Supervise daily support‑group meetings and facilitate Mother‑to‑Mother and Father‑to‑Father groups.
• Collaborate with health facilities and OTP sites to ensure treatment of malnourished children follows CMAM protocols.
• Identify Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) cases, provide counselling and refer to Community Management of Acute Malnutrition services.
• Collect, collate and report monthly programme data and prepare transport requests for field activities.
• Participate in food‑demonstration training and support the Tom‑Brown approach for children under five.
• Contribute to child safeguarding systems and report any concerns in line with the Child Safeguarding Policy.

Required profile

• Experience in community‑based nutrition programmes and child malnutrition management.
• Knowledge of IYCF, IYCF‑Emergency, CMAM and MAM protocols.
• Ability to train health workers, lead mothers and community volunteers.
• Strong field supervision and data‑collection skills.
• Commitment to child safeguarding and safe‑working practices.
