Legal Adviser and Company Secretary

About the role

The British Council in Nigeria is seeking a Legal Adviser and Company Secretary to provide strategic legal, governance and regulatory leadership. The role supports the Board, Country Director and senior leadership team across corporate, commercial, programme, employment and data protection matters.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the principal legal adviser to the Board, Country Director and senior leadership, delivering commercial and risk‑based advice.
• Oversee legal risk management, corporate governance, litigation, contracting and regulatory compliance for all business functions.
• Coordinate internal and external legal advice and ensure compliance with Nigerian laws and British Council policies.
• Lead the management of disputes, investigations, litigation, regulatory enquiries and enforcement actions.
• Serve as Company Secretary, managing board meetings, statutory filings and corporate governance processes.

Required profile

• Legal qualification and the right to work in Nigeria.
• Proven experience advising senior leadership on corporate, commercial and regulatory matters.
• Strong understanding of Nigerian corporate law, employment law, data protection and intellectual property.
