Head of Molecular Genetics

About the role

The Head of Molecular Genetics will lead the Molecular Genetics Department at the African Medical Centre of Excellence, providing both strategic direction and day‑to‑day operational oversight. This senior position is responsible for delivering high‑complexity genetic testing, driving translational research, and ensuring compliance with national and international quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the department’s strategic vision in line with the hospital’s mission.
• Provide executive leadership for all clinical, research and operational activities.
• Manage budget, staffing, and procurement of advanced laboratory equipment.
• Oversee high‑complexity molecular testing (NGS, PCR, Sanger sequencing, cytogenetics) and ensure accurate result interpretation.
• Lead a robust research program, secure grants and publish findings.
• Supervise development and validation of bioinformatics pipelines and integrate genomic data with electronic health records.
• Ensure compliance with MLSCN, NAFDAC, ISO 15189, CAP and CLIA standards and lead external audits.
• Foster interdisciplinary collaboration with Oncology, Pediatrics, Neurology and Pathology.

Required profile

• Proven ability to provide strategic and operational leadership for a molecular genetics laboratory.
• Experience overseeing clinical, research and administrative functions.
• Capability to manage departmental resources, including budgeting and staffing.
• Strong track record of collaboration with clinical specialties.

Required skills

• Next‑generation sequencing (NGS) platforms.
• PCR‑based assays.
• Sanger sequencing.
• Cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic analysis.
• Design and validation of bioinformatics pipelines for genomic data.
• Secure management and interpretation of large‑scale genomic datasets.
• Integration of genomic data with electronic health records.
• Knowledge of accreditation standards: ISO 15189, CAP, CLIA.
• Familiarity with Nigerian regulatory bodies (MLSCN, NAFDAC).
