Technical Support Consultant for Large‑Scale Food Fortification and Iodine Nutrition

About the role

UNICEF is seeking an experienced consultant to provide high‑level technical, policy and coordination support for large‑scale food fortification (LSFF) and universal salt iodisation (USI) across West and Central Africa. The role is office‑based in Abuja with travel to member states.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare technical products, frameworks and operational recommendations to strengthen institutional capacity and regional standards for LSFF and USI.
• Support regional economic communities and member states in policy reform, standards harmonisation, and development of technical specifications for monitoring systems.
• Facilitate high‑level consultations, ministerial meetings and multi‑stakeholder platforms.
• Contribute to broader food systems transformation initiatives such as the First Foods Africa initiative.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Nutrition, Development, Economics or related field.
• 10‑15 years of progressive experience in public nutrition, food systems or public health, with substantial LSFF/USI experience.
• Proven experience supporting regional or multi‑country programmes in Africa, especially within WCAR.
• Fluency in written and oral French and English; Portuguese knowledge is desirable.

Required skills

• Technical knowledge of LSFF, USI, food standards and quality assurance/control systems.
• Understanding of premix supply systems, regulatory monitoring and compliance mechanisms.
• Familiarity with regional trade systems and cross‑border regulatory frameworks.
