Head of Design and Estimation (MEP) - Lagos

About the role

An engineering and technical services company specialising in project execution and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) systems for construction projects is hiring a Head of Design and Estimation in Lagos. The role oversees all company-wide MEP design development and material estimation, ensuring accurate, compliant and competitive technical submissions across projects.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and direction for design and estimation across all MEP disciplines, aligned with company objectives, project needs and client expectations.
• Oversee complete MEP designs, including HVAC (VRF and chilled water systems), plumbing and fire protection, in line with codes, standards and best practice.
• Lead materials estimation, quantity take-offs and value engineering to deliver competitive, accurate tenders.
• Coordinate with project ownership, commercial, procurement and delivery teams so designs are buildable and cost-effective.
• Review and approve design calculations, drawings, specifications and estimates before submission to clients, consultants or authorities.
• Manage design from concept and tender through detailed design and IFC documentation, using AutoCAD and other design software.
• Mentor design engineers and estimators, identify design risks in tender and pre-construction phases and liaise with clients, consultants and authorities on technical requirements and approvals.
• Support contract negotiations with technical clarifications and value engineering proposals, and keep up with market trends and new technologies.

Required profile

• First degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, from a reputable institution.
• Minimum 6 years' proven experience in MEP design and estimation, with strong exposure to HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems.
• Demonstrated experience preparing detailed designs, technical calculations, BOQs and cost estimates for medium- to large-scale projects.
• Experience supporting tendering, technical submissions and value engineering.
• Proven leadership experience managing design and estimation teams, and the ability to design and estimate MEP systems independently.

Required skills

• Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD; other design and estimation software is an advantage.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, leadership, commercial awareness and time management.
