Chemist - Quality Control Laboratory

About the role

HBM Nigeria is looking for a Chemist to carry out qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses in its laboratory for process and quality control, in line with the quality control plan and health, safety and environmental policies. The role covers analysis of raw materials, intermediates and finished products, and liaison with plant units and engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze raw materials, intermediate and finished products using spectroscopic and/or gravimetric techniques according to the Quality Control Plan, ensuring accuracy, precision and on-time completion.
• Analyze the daily chemical composition of additives and correctives in various feeders (HGL, gypsum, iron ore, sand and clinker) and the raw mix, and follow up the stacking and reclaiming of material at the RMS/CBS/LBS.
• Take responsibility for the mix proportions of additives and correctives based on their chemical composition, and document and analyze test results to diagnose malfunctions.
• Liaise with CCR Engineers and Shift Leaders to define corrective and preventive actions when targets are missed, and monitor performance with statistical reports.
• Monitor QA&C instruments (XRF, XRD, QCX, auto samplers, LECO, Cross Belt Analyzer) and maintain them; calibrate XRF/XRD and LECO machines and prepare secondary standards and reagents.
• Direct, coordinate and advise the Assistant Shift Chemist and samplers, and guide and motivate subordinates.
• Carry out other duties assigned by the Quality Coordinator or Quality Manager.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a natural, physical or applied science.
• Previous experience in a manufacturing laboratory as a quality assurance analyst.
• Good knowledge of the cement manufacturing process and of product quality parameters and quality control tests.
• Able to take initiative with sound problem-solving skills.
