Senior Registrar Emergency Medicine Physician

About the role

The Senior Registrar in Emergency Medicine delivers high‑quality acute care, managing a broad spectrum of urgent illnesses and injuries while ensuring efficient patient flow through the department. The role combines direct clinical responsibility with leadership of multidisciplinary teams in a fast‑paced hospital environment.

Key responsibilities

• Perform rapid assessments, order and interpret investigations (labs, imaging, ECG) and deliver emergency interventions such as advanced airway management, defibrillation, cardioversion, wound care, suturing, fracture reduction and lumbar puncture.
• Stabilize critically ill patients, coordinate transfers to ICU or specialty units and oversee patient flow from triage to disposition, collaborating with radiology, surgery, ICU and laboratory services.
• Supervise and mentor medical officers, residents and interns, act as shift lead, and make operational decisions together with the Consultant Emergency Physician and nursing team.
• Maintain accurate electronic medical records, ensure compliance with infection control, clinical guidelines and quality standards, and contribute to audits, research projects and departmental policy development.

Required profile

• MBBS (or equivalent) with 1‑4 years post‑fellowship experience in emergency medicine.
• Membership in an emergency medicine college (e.g., MWACEM, MRCEM) and a valid Nigerian medical licence.
• Certifications in Advanced Life Support (ALS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
• Demonstrated expertise in high‑acuity emergency care, trauma management and procedural skills.

• ECG interpretation and emergency imaging review.
• Airway management, defibrillation, cardioversion and emergency procedural skills (suturing, fracture reduction, lumbar puncture).
