Humanitarian Safety Technical Officer – North West Nigeria

About the role

The Humanitarian Safety Technical Officer will support the establishment and daily operation of the Humanitarian Safety Unit for the North‑West region, providing NIF member organisations with a coordinated safety mechanism. The role involves facilitating collaboration, information sharing, and evidence‑based planning among INGOs operating in a complex and volatile context.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, convene and facilitate humanitarian safety coordination meetings and roundtables for NIF members across the North West.
• Develop, validate and disseminate safety information products, including the 6Ws database and quarterly operational reports.
• Maintain a database of voluntarily reported operational incidents, analyse trends and produce analytical outputs.
• Identify capacity‑development needs and coordinate logistics for HEAT, SSAFE or equivalent safety training.
• Liaise regularly with government authorities and coordination stakeholders to support humanitarian access and operational coordination.

Required profile

• Minimum 2–3 years of coordination experience in humanitarian or recovery contexts, preferably in complex and volatile environments.
• University degree in conflict and development, international relations, humanitarian law or a related field.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of Hausa or other Northern Nigerian languages is an advantage.
• Strong understanding of the security environment, humanitarian coordination system and relevant UN frameworks.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office applications, especially Word and Excel.
• Experience in data analysis and managing operational databases.
• Familiarity with the UN Security Management System and the Saving Lives Together framework.
