Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Package Management

About the role

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a team responsible for the technologies that underpin software management and system lifecycle experiences across Ubuntu. You will combine technical leadership with people management, shaping engineering direction while supporting the growth and development of experienced engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Define technical vision and roadmap for package management, updates, drivers, firmware and related infrastructure.
• Participate in design reviews and guide architecture decisions affecting software distribution and release processes.
• Promote high standards for performance, reliability, security, compatibility and maintainability.
• Lead and mentor a team of experienced engineers, fostering ownership, collaboration and continuous improvement.
• Plan and deliver improvements across multiple release cycles while balancing innovation with stability.
• Improve test automation, release quality, engineering processes and operational reliability.
• Build strong partnerships with desktop, server, security, release engineering, product and OEM teams.
• Collaborate with Debian, upstream projects and the wider open‑source community.

Required profile

• Exceptional academic performance with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM or equivalent professional background.
• Strong professional experience in software engineering, system design and development of complex platforms.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams, including people management, coaching and performance development.
• Experience developing or operating Linux distribution technologies, package management systems or software distribution infrastructure.
• Solid understanding of systems software and operating‑system architecture.
• Willingness to travel internationally approximately twice per year.
