Volunteer Counselor/Therapist

About the role

The Volunteer Counselor/Therapist will work full‑time on‑site in Owerri, providing direct mental‑health support to individuals and groups. This position is part of HealthPlanet Foundation’s mission to expand accessible, compassionate mental‑wellness services.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct one‑on‑one counseling sessions and facilitate peer‑support groups.
• Provide crisis intervention and short‑term therapeutic support as needed.
• Assess client needs, develop care plans, maintain confidential records, and refer to external services.
• Participate in workshops, community outreach events, and educational programs to promote mental‑health awareness.
• Collaborate with volunteers, staff, and partner organisations to ensure coordinated, ethical, and culturally sensitive care.

Required profile

• Strong counseling and psychotherapy skills, including active listening and trauma‑informed support.
• Experience in mental‑health assessment, case management, and referral coordination.
• Ability to facilitate groups, deliver workshops, and provide psycho‑education to diverse audiences.
• Commitment to professional boundaries, documentation, and confidentiality standards.
• Relevant degree or certification in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field is highly beneficial.
• Previous experience in community mental health, non‑profit, or volunteer settings, especially within African contexts, is an advantage.
• Excellent communication, cultural sensitivity, and teamwork skills.
