Software Engineer – PHP

About the role

Crown Interactive is seeking an experienced PHP Software Engineer to join its team in developing sovereign digital platforms for governments and critical sectors across Africa. The role involves designing, building, and maintaining high‑quality web applications that support large‑scale public‑sector initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, test, and maintain PHP‑based web applications using modern frameworks.
• Write clean, efficient, well‑documented code following industry best practices.
• Collaborate with front‑end developers, designers, and other engineers to deliver seamless user experiences.
• Design and implement RESTful and SOAP APIs and integrate third‑party services.
• Optimize application performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure security and data protection.
• Maintain and improve database structures in MySQL and PostgreSQL.
• Participate in code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to workflow improvements.

Required profile

• Minimum 6 years of professional experience as a PHP software engineer.
• Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
• Experience with Agile development methodologies is a plus.

Required skills

• PHP 7+ and object‑oriented programming.
• Yii1, Yii2, Laravel, Symfony, CodeIgniter (MVC frameworks).
• MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL query optimization.
• Linux environment.
• HTML, CSS, JavaScript (Vue.js, React, Angular optional).
• Version control (Git, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket).
• API development (RESTful, SOAP).
• Security best practices and performance tuning.
• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) – optional.
• Database design and SaaS application deployment.
• Java knowledge – optional.
