Backend Engineer (Node.js) – Payment Systems

About the role

Flutterwave is looking for a Backend Engineer specialized in Node.js to help build, scale, and maintain the high‑performance services that power its cross‑border payment platform. You will work on core payment APIs, ensuring reliability, security, and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and maintain new and existing product features.
• Create clear technical documentation for each feature.
• Research and propose improvements for existing functionalities.
• Participate in system design and architectural discussions.
• Apply secure coding practices and support security reviews.
• Provide troubleshooting and support for live product features.
• Ensure personal data is handled in compliance with privacy regulations.
• Perform any additional duties as assigned.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional backend development experience with Node.js.
• Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript; TypeScript is a plus.
• Solid understanding of object‑oriented or functional design principles.
• Good grasp of data structures, algorithms, and performance optimization.
• Experience with RESTful API design, JWT and OAuth2 authentication, and security best practices.
• Proficient with Git workflows, code reviews, and version control.
• Clear verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to own tasks from specification through deployment.
