Senior Registrar Anaesthetist

About the role

The Senior Registrar Anaesthetist provides anaesthetic services for surgical and diagnostic procedures, ensuring patient safety and high‑quality care while supporting specialists and mentoring junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Perform emergency assessments, life‑saving procedures (CPR, intubation) and manage shock, trauma or medical emergencies.
• Conduct pre‑operative anaesthetic assessments, obtain consent and optimise high‑risk patients with multidisciplinary teams.
• Administer general, regional or local anaesthesia, monitor vital signs, manage airway challenges and respond to intra‑operative complications.
• Oversee post‑anaesthetic care in the PACU, manage pain, monitor recovery and document outcomes.
• Participate in quality improvement, clinical audits, incident reporting and development of SOPs.
• Provide acute and chronic pain management, including PCA, epidural and regional techniques.
• Engage in research, present findings and contribute to peer‑reviewed publications.

Required profile

• MBBS/MBChB or equivalent recognised by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
• Full MDCN registration, annual practising licence and successful Part I Fellowship or Membership in Anaesthesia.
• Completed junior residency training with satisfactory logbooks.
• NYSC discharge or exemption certificate where applicable.
• Documented ICU experience with mechanical ventilation and haemodynamic monitoring.
• Experience supervising junior medical staff; cardiothoracic anaesthesia exposure is desirable.
