Safeguarding and PSHEA Officer

About the role

Plan International, an independent development and humanitarian organisation advancing children's rights and equality for girls, is recruiting a Safeguarding and PSHEA Officer for its Country Office in Abuja, Nigeria. The post works closely with the Country Safeguarding and PSHEA Manager to support monitoring of Safeguarding Policy, Standards and Procedures, and provides technical support to partners and departments on safeguarding and PSHEA policies and procedures. The role is fixed-term.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver and support Safeguarding and PSHEA training for staff, associates, visitors and stakeholders to strengthen awareness, commitment and compliance.
• Support the development, updating and dissemination of IEC materials on Safeguarding and PSHEA, covering expected behaviours, reporting mechanisms and support available.
• Support regular safeguarding spot checks and annual Safeguarding and PSHEA audits, providing coaching and technical support to address gaps and implement corrective actions.
• Provide safeguarding and PSHEA technical input into programme design and implementation to integrate Safe Programming standards.
• Serve as the Country Office Safeguarding focal point, coordinating the reporting, documentation, escalation and referral of safeguarding concerns and allegations.
• Support accessible reporting and referral pathways across offices, programmes, partners and communities.
• Coordinate safeguarding standards across departments and support country-level action plans to close implementation gaps.
• Help management and programme teams identify, assess and mitigate safeguarding risks, including online and digital safeguarding risks.
• Maintain a central system for collating and monitoring Safeguarding and PSHEA implementation data, and coordinate the annual self-assessment of safeguarding implementation standards.

Required profile

• University degree or equivalent in Education, Social Science, Social Work, Psychology or a related field.
• 4 years of relevant experience as a Safeguarding Officer within an INGO, in safeguarding and PSHEA policy development, implementation and monitoring.
• Knowledge of the Nigerian Child Rights Act, the VAPP Act, child protection and GBV policies and practice, and current safeguarding issues in Nigeria.
• Strong writing and mature communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
• Demonstrated sensitivity, confidentiality and a survivor-focused safeguarding approach.
• Excellent listening, communication and networking skills in remote and in-person contexts.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite.
• Technical skills and experience in protection, GBV or gender are highly desirable.
