Medical Officer

About the role

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is looking for a qualified Medical Officer to deliver comprehensive clinical services at its headquarters in Ibadan. This is a six‑month fixed‑term position with the possibility of renewal, focused on primary care, emergency response, and occupational health support.

Key responsibilities

• Manage common medical, surgical, obstetric‑gynecological and paediatric conditions.
• Provide first‑aid and emergency care for trauma, communicable and non‑communicable diseases.
• Set up and monitor intravenous infusions as required.
• Deliver health education on hygiene, nutrition, family planning and disease prevention.
• Collaborate with nurses to develop educational content for health seminars.
• Support occupational health activities and liaise with the occupational health team.
• Arrange referrals to external facilities in coordination with the Family Physician.
• Assist in scheduling specialist clinics and follow‑up care.
• Conduct point‑of‑care diagnostic testing and use laboratory and other diagnostic equipment.
• Participate in patient discharge planning with the Family Physician and unit head.
• Perform any additional duties assigned by the supervisor.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MBBS or MBChB) with a current annual practising licence.
• Minimum five (5) years of clinical experience in outpatient, inpatient and paediatric settings.
• Nigerian national.
• Ability to work under pressure and maintain good organisational standards.

Required skills

• Point‑of‑care diagnostic testing.
• Intravenous infusion set‑up and monitoring.
• Computer literacy for clinical documentation.
