Medical Officer – 6‑month renewable role

About the role

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is seeking a qualified Medical Officer to join its headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria. This six‑month renewable position involves delivering primary medical care to institute staff and supporting occupational health activities within a research‑focused campus environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and manage common medical, surgical, obstetric‑gynecologic and paediatric conditions.
• Provide first‑aid and emergency care for trauma, communicable and non‑communicable diseases.
• Set up intravenous infusions and perform point‑of‑care diagnostic tests.
• Deliver health education on hygiene, nutrition, family planning and disease prevention.
• Collaborate with nurses to develop educational content for health seminars.
• Coordinate occupational health activities and specialist clinic scheduling.
• Arrange referrals to external facilities and follow up on patient outcomes.
• Investigate clinical problems using laboratory and diagnostic equipment.
• Assist the Family Physician and unit head with discharge planning and other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• MBBS or MBChB degree with a current annual medical practising licence.
• Minimum five years of clinical experience in outpatient, inpatient and paediatric care.
• Strong organisational abilities and capacity to work under pressure.
• Eligibility to work in Nigeria (Nigeria national).
