Consultant, Paediatrics - Portharcourt

About the role

The Consultant, Paediatrics provides specialist medical care for infants, children and adolescents in outpatient, inpatient and referral settings. The role covers independent assessment and management of complex paediatric conditions, senior clinical guidance, supervision and training of junior staff, and contribution to clinical governance and patient safety. It reports to the Head of Department, Obstetrics & Gynaecology / Paediatrics, in Portharcourt, Nigeria.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, diagnose and manage paediatric patients, including complex and high-risk cases, and lead management of acute and chronic childhood illnesses and emergencies
• Give specialist consultations, second opinions and clinical guidance to senior medical officers, medical officers and trainees
• Supervise, mentor and train junior staff, and coordinate care across outpatient clinics, wards, emergency services and referral pathways
• Take part in multidisciplinary case reviews, clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings and quality improvement initiatives
• Maintain clinical records, coding and reporting, and support HMO and managed-care processes
• Keep MDCN registration, annual practising licence and CPD up to date

Required profile

• MBBS or MBChB, completed housemanship/internship and NYSC (or valid exemption)
• Recognised postgraduate fellowship in Paediatrics (e.g. FMCPaed or FWACP); additional subspecialty qualifications desirable
• Minimum 5 years of post-fellowship specialist experience
• Full MDCN registration, valid annual practising licence and good professional standing
• Desirable: experience in a multispecialty or public-sector hospital, familiarity with HMO-managed care, and paediatric life support or neonatal resuscitation training
