Consultant, Family Medicine - Portharcourt

About the role

The Consultant, Family Medicine provides comprehensive specialist care to patients across outpatient, inpatient and referral settings, covering acute and chronic conditions. The role includes leading assessments, diagnosis and treatment, giving specialist guidance, supervising and training junior staff, and contributing to clinical governance and patient safety. It reports to the Head of Department, Family Medicine / Internal Medicine.

Key responsibilities

• Assess, diagnose and manage acute, chronic and complex conditions, and deliver evidence-based care in outpatient clinics, inpatient services and referral pathways
• Manage chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, and provide preventive care, screening, counselling and lifestyle advice
• Coordinate care for patients with multiple conditions and give second opinions and clinical guidance to junior doctors and trainees
• Supervise, mentor and train junior medical staff, and take part in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews and quality improvement
• Maintain clinical records, coding and reporting, and support HMO and managed-care processes
• Keep MDCN registration and practising licence current, and contribute to clinical guidelines and service improvements

Required profile

• MBBS or MBChB, completed housemanship/internship and NYSC (or valid exemption)
• Recognised postgraduate fellowship in Family Medicine; FMCP or FWACP or equivalent, registered with MDCN
• At least 5 years of post-fellowship specialist experience
• Valid MDCN annual practising licence, good professional standing and evidence of continuing professional development
• Desirable: additional subspecialty training, membership of professional associations, and experience in multispecialty or public-sector hospitals
