Consultant Cardiac Surgeon – Abuja, Nigeria

About the role

The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) in Abuja seeks a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to deliver expert, patient‑centred surgical care for adults and children with complex cardiac conditions. The role involves pre‑operative evaluation, surgical management, and post‑operative follow‑up, while contributing to teaching, mentorship and clinical innovation within the Cardiovascular Services line.

Key responsibilities

• Perform consultant‑level cardiac surgeries including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair/replacement, aortic procedures and complex congenital heart defect repairs.
• Interpret diagnostic tests such as echocardiography and cardiac catheterisation data to guide surgical planning.
• Develop and monitor individualized peri‑operative and long‑term treatment plans in line with evidence‑based practice.
• Provide expert consultation to cardiology, intensive care and other multidisciplinary teams.
• Participate actively in Heart Team meetings and multidisciplinary case discussions.
• Adhere to hospital policies, clinical guidelines and surgical safety protocols.
• Engage in clinical audit, quality improvement and risk‑management activities.

Required profile

• Qualified cardiac surgeon with extensive experience in adult and/or paediatric cardiac surgery.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior medical staff.
• Commitment to clinical excellence, research and education.
• Registered medical practitioner authorised to practise in Nigeria.
