Board Member (Volunteer) – Non‑profit Organization

About the role

Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organisation (WEWE) is seeking a dedicated volunteer board member for a renewable three‑year term. The role is based in Abuja and offers the chance to contribute strategic leadership to a faith‑based non‑profit serving widows, orphans and vulnerable communities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership, governance and direction aligned with WEWE’s vision, mission and values.
• Oversee the selection, support and annual performance review of the Executive Director.
• Approve policies, work plans, budgets, staff remuneration and compensation packages.
• Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, including annual returns to the Corporate Affairs Commission.
• Appoint external auditors, review financial statements and submit audit reports to the Board.
• Drive fundraising campaigns and represent WEWE in donor and partner engagements.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of senior leadership experience (e.g., Head of Department, CEO, Chief of Party).
• Registered or certified professional status (chartered accountant, auditor, lawyer, medical doctor, public health practitioner, banker, financial expert, child psychologist, registered nurse, etc.).
• Demonstrated integrity, honesty and a genuine passion for service.
• Valid Tax Identification Number and Tax Clearance Certificate.
• No convictions for fraud or dishonesty in the past five years.
• Residency in Abuja is an advantage; prior board experience is a plus.
