Principal Software Engineer – Payments Platforms

About the role

FairMoney is a mobile banking pioneer in Nigeria, building a comprehensive platform for credit, accounts, cards and POS solutions. The Payments Platforms team owns the core rails that move money, handling disbursements, repayments and transfers at scale. As a Principal Software Engineer you will shape the technical direction of this critical platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain APIs and services that handle money movement across banks, switches and payment processors.
• Contribute to the overall architecture, defining service boundaries, data ownership and system guarantees.
• Implement robust failure‑handling patterns such as idempotency, retries, reconciliation and settlement.
• Debug and resolve critical production incidents across the full stack.
• Lead design reviews and set engineering quality standards for the team.
• Mentor senior engineers and spread payments expertise throughout the organization.
• Collaborate closely with product, risk, operations and partner‑facing teams.

Required profile

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record of technical leadership.
• Background in payments, banking or fintech, understanding ledgers, settlement and reconciliation.
• 2+ years of hands‑on experience with Go, Java.NET or TypeScript.
• Experience building distributed, event‑driven systems and handling failures.
• Strong API design skills and integration experience with external third parties at scale.
• Deep knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
• Hands‑on experience with messaging/streaming technologies like Kafka, RabbitMQ, SNS or SQS.
• Proven ability to build highly available, observable systems and debug complex production issues.
