Corporate Legal Counsel

About the role

British American Tobacco Nigeria is seeking a Corporate Legal Counsel to provide proactive legal advisory and company secretarial support for its operations in Nigeria. The role sits within a fast‑paced legal team covering the Sub‑Saharan Africa region and works closely with commercial, finance and HR functions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide proactive legal advisory and counselling to internal teams and commercial units across Nigeria.
• Act as Company Secretary for the British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (Limited by Guaranty).
• Draft, review and negotiate contractual documentation, ensuring the company’s interests are protected.
• Support corporate and commercial projects, finance regulatory audits, bank guarantees, indemnities, corporate structuring, treasury, tax and excise matters.
• Advise on employment‑related issues, including dispute resolution and disciplinary proceedings.
• Assist the Litigation Counsel in managing the litigation portfolio and respond to regulator and government agency inquiries.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with at least 10 years post‑call experience, preferably in commercial and regulatory law.
• In‑depth knowledge of legal and regulatory issues affecting the tobacco industry in Nigeria.
• Proven ability to deliver commercially driven advice and manage legal risk.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders.

Required skills

• Proficient use of Microsoft Office tools.
• Experience with AI‑enabled legal tools and platforms.
