About the role
The Nurse Anesthetist is responsible for assessing, preparing, and monitoring patients throughout the anesthesia process, ensuring safety and comfort from pre‑operative assessment to post‑operative recovery. Working under the supervision of a physician anesthesiologist, the role involves collaboration with surgeons, nurses, and technical staff in a hospital setting.
Key responsibilities
- Perform pre‑anesthesia assessments, obtain informed consent, and develop individualized anesthesia plans.
- Administer general, regional, or local anesthesia using techniques such as intravenous, inhalational, spinal, or nerve block.
- Continuously monitor vital signs, consciousness level, and pain, adjusting anesthesia as needed.
- Identify and manage anesthesia‑related complications, including hypotension, hypoxia, bleeding, and allergic reactions.
- Provide post‑anesthesia care, ensuring smooth transition to ward or intensive care.
- Document all anesthesia activities, outcomes, and incidents accurately.
- Maintain anesthesia equipment, supplies, and drugs, ensuring proper storage, usage, and disposal.
- Follow infection prevention, standard precautions, and waste management protocols.
- Perform sterilization duties when assigned, including cleaning equipment and preparing sterile instrument trays.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives for anesthesia services.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing or equivalent.
- Post‑graduate diploma or certificate in nurse anesthesia.
- Valid license or registration to practice as a Nurse Anesthetist.
- Minimum three years of experience in a hospital setting, preferably in low‑resource or humanitarian contexts.
Required skills
- Proficiency with anesthesia equipment and drug administration.
- Competence in general, regional, and local anesthesia techniques.
- Ability to monitor and manage patient vital signs during procedures.
- Knowledge of infection control and sterilization processes.
- Capability to document clinical activities accurately.
