Web Designer (WordPress + Design)

About the role

Appnable is seeking a remote Web Designer who is equally comfortable building custom WordPress solutions and creating original visual designs. You will join a small, close‑knit team and report to the Design Lead, working on a school website and other client projects.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and support an existing WordPress site while progressively improving its design and functionality.
• Develop custom WordPress themes, templates, PHP code, hooks, filters, ACF fields and custom post types.
• Diagnose and resolve live‑site issues, apply updates safely, and ensure site stability.
• Optimise performance for media‑heavy pages (image optimisation, lazy loading, caching, Core Web Vitals).
• Create original graphics, icons and visual assets with strong typographic and compositional sense.
• Design mobile‑first, accessible interfaces that meet readability, contrast and screen‑reader requirements.
• Write clean, semantic HTML and CSS; add JavaScript for interactivity and third‑party integrations as needed.
• Collaborate using Git‑based workflows across staging and production environments.

Required profile

• Proven experience building and maintaining custom WordPress templates beyond page‑builder solutions.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating original design concepts and visual direction.
• Ability to produce original graphics and visual assets.
• Comfortable working with HTML, CSS and sufficient JavaScript for real interactivity.
• Mobile‑first mindset with a focus on accessibility.
