Special Risk Underwriting Officer

About the role

The Special Risk Underwriting Officer will evaluate unique and complex risks for a leading Nigerian insurance firm. You will apply specialized underwriting expertise to ensure profitable policies for high‑value portfolios in sectors such as energy and aviation.

Key responsibilities

• Acknowledge mail and general correspondence.
• Prepare and deliver policy documents and renewal or adjustment endorsements.
• Write outstanding and reminder letters to secure premium payments.
• Enter accurate data into underwriting systems and maintain files.
• Issue renewal notices six weeks before policy expiry and follow up per SLA.
• Apply Risk Assessment Criteria (RAC) for energy and aviation reinsurance.
• Produce daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly income, collection, and NAICOM reports.
• Provide detailed information to claims, accounts, and other internal units.
• Assist relationship officers/managers with relevant risk information.
• Update underwriting files on the EDMS regularly.
• Collate documents for NAICOM compliance and develop standard indexing per prudential guidelines.

Required profile

• First degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
• 0–1 years of relevant experience in the insurance industry.
• Ability to assess complex or unique risks beyond standard criteria.
• Knowledge of risk exposure evaluation and accurate pricing of policies.
• Deep understanding of sectors such as oil & energy or aviation.
• Skill in drafting clear, client‑specific policy language.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
