Senior Plant Operator

About the role

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture is seeking a Senior Plant Operator to manage and maintain its central air‑conditioning chiller system at the Ibadan headquarters. This fixed‑term position involves rotating day and night shifts to ensure continuous operation of critical cooling equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Operate the central air‑conditioner chiller on a rotational shift schedule.
• Perform routine maintenance, daily checks, and urgent repairs on condensers and chiller pumps.
• Service and repair cooling towers, and maintain related equipment such as cold refrigerators and water coolers.
• Monitor system parameters including temperature, pressure, flow rates, and energy consumption.
• Assist with installation of air‑conditioners and keep accurate daily operation records.
• Execute any additional duties assigned by the supervisor.

Required profile

• Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Mechanical Engineering, a Trade Test Certificate, or equivalent.
• Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in a structured organization.
• Understanding of chiller types (air‑cooled, water‑cooled) and related components.

Required skills

• Chiller operation and start‑up/shut‑down procedures.
• Maintenance of condensers, chiller pumps, and cooling towers.
• Monitoring of temperature, pressure, flow rates, and energy use.
• Installation and maintenance of air‑conditioners, refrigerators, and water coolers.
• Knowledge of compressors, evaporators, condensers, pumps, thermodynamics, and heat‑transfer principles.
• Familiarity with VRV and inverter systems (advantage).
