Senior Java Backend Engineer

About the role

Flutterwave is seeking a Senior Java Backend Engineer to build and maintain the core payment systems that power its financial products. You will work in an agile team, designing high‑performance services that enable secure, borderless transactions for consumers and businesses across Africa and beyond.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and deliver Java‑based features and RESTful APIs within an event‑driven microservice architecture.
• Create and evolve database schemas and ORM mappings to support new products and enhancements.
• Write clean, version‑controlled code following object‑oriented principles and ensure code integrity.
• Implement unit tests and set up automated testing pipelines to guarantee robustness and scalability.
• Monitor and optimise JVM performance, multithreading, and overall application efficiency.
• Collaborate with product, security and data‑privacy teams to maintain high standards of security and compliance.
• Leverage AI coding assistants such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot to accelerate development while reviewing and validating generated code.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical best‑practice research.

Required profile

• 5‑6 years of professional experience with Java, JEE and Spring Boot.
• Hands‑on expertise in Java 8, multithreading, JVM tuning and performance optimisation.
• Strong analytical skills with solid knowledge of data structures, algorithms and problem‑solving.
• Experience building RESTful APIs and event‑driven microservices.
• Proficiency in designing database schemas and using ORM frameworks.
• Familiarity with AI coding assistants and ability to assess their output critically.
• Commitment to code security, data‑privacy and continuous learning of new technologies.
