Senior Database Administrator (Oracle & PostgreSQL)

About the role

The employer seeks an expert-level, hands-on Database Administrator to design, implement, secure and support mission-critical database environments on Oracle and PostgreSQL. The role covers production, test and development estates, with 24x7 operational support in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment, and acts as the senior technical authority on database architecture, performance, high availability, disaster recovery and security.

Key responsibilities

• Administer, tune and support enterprise Oracle (11g/12c/19c/21c) and PostgreSQL (12-16) databases across production, DR, UAT and development environments.
• Design high-availability and disaster recovery architectures, including Oracle RAC, Data Guard and PostgreSQL streaming/logical replication.
• Lead performance tuning and capacity planning, including SQL optimization, indexing, execution plans and workload/resource management.
• Own backup, recovery and business continuity (RMAN, pg_dump, barman or pgBackRest), with regular DR testing and documented RTO/RPO compliance.
• Plan and execute upgrades, patching, migrations and version consolidations with minimal downtime.
• Implement security controls: user/role administration, privilege management, encryption (TDE, SSL/TLS), auditing and compliance (e.g. PCI-DSS).
• Lead or support migrations such as Oracle-to-PostgreSQL and cloud/on-prem transitions.
• Provide senior troubleshooting and root-cause analysis, including on-call/escalation rotation for production support.
• Automate tasks and monitoring with scripting (Shell, Python, PL/SQL, PL/pgSQL) and enterprise monitoring tools.
• Maintain documentation (architecture diagrams, SOPs, runbooks) and mentor junior and mid-level DBAs.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 8 years of hands-on DBA experience, with at least 4 years each on Oracle and PostgreSQL in enterprise production.
• Experience in a banking, financial services or other highly regulated industry is strongly preferred.

Required skills

• Oracle: architecture, RAC, ASM, Data Guard, RMAN, AWR/ADDM/SQL Tuning Advisor.
• PostgreSQL: architecture, replication, PgBouncer/pgpool-II, performance tuning.
• Linux/Unix (including AIX and/or RHEL) server administration.
• SQL, PL/SQL and PL/pgSQL, including stored procedures, triggers and packages.
• Database security hardening, encryption, auditing and compliance.
• Preferred: OCP, EDB/PostgreSQL and ITIL certifications; cloud database services and containers.
