Research Technician – Yam Pollen Research

About the role

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is seeking a Research Technician to support yam pollen research at its headquarters in Ibadan. The role involves both field and laboratory work, focusing on the collection, handling, and documentation of yam pollen for breeding programs.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor designated yam fields and crossing blocks for flowering and identify male plants at the correct stage.
• Collect mature anthers/pollen from specific yam genotypes, often in early‑morning sessions.
• Label samples immediately, record detailed metadata (genotype, plot, date, time, flower stage, etc.), and transport them under prescribed conditions.
• Maintain daily logs of flowering and pollen availability and ensure traceability throughout processing.

Required profile

• National Diploma in Agriculture, Plant Breeding or a related field.
• Minimum two years of experience performing similar duties in a structured organization.
• Strong attention to detail, ability to follow SOPs, and competence in both field and laboratory environments.

Required skills

• Microscopy (light microscope) operation.
• Microsoft Excel for data entry and record‑keeping.
