Plant Operator

About the role

The Plant Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy plant and mobile equipment supporting cargo‑handling activities at the GDNL Terminal ‘E’ in Apapa Port, Lagos. Reporting to the Head of Engineering & Strategic Services, the role ensures continuous terminal productivity while adhering to strict safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Operate heavy plant and mobile equipment such as pail loaders, reach stackers, forklifts, cranes and terminal tractors for bulk cargo discharge, ashore and warehouse loading.
• Perform pre‑operation checks and routine inspections to confirm equipment is in good working condition.
• Monitor equipment performance during use, report any defects or abnormalities, and coordinate maintenance as needed.
• Support efficient cargo movement to meet productivity targets and maintain a safe, organized work environment.
• Report incidents, near‑misses and equipment issues promptly to supervisors.
• Collaborate with other operators and supervisors to ensure smooth workflow.

Required profile

• Minimum five (5) years of hands‑on experience operating heavy plant machinery in a maritime port terminal, large construction site or industrial logistics hub.
• O‑Level qualification (WAEC/NECO/GCE/NABTEB); trade test certificates in Mechanical/Plant Operation are an advantage.
• Strong understanding of port safety regulations and ability to follow SOPs accurately.
• Basic mechanical awareness to identify and report equipment faults.
• Good communication skills and ability to work safely in high‑traffic environments.
