Mud Man

About the role

The Mud Man supports the drilling team by preparing, monitoring, and maintaining drilling fluids (mud) to ensure optimal performance throughout drilling operations. The role is essential for maintaining well integrity and drilling efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain drilling fluids according to approved programmes.
• Monitor mud properties such as density, viscosity, filtration, pH, and solids content.
• Conduct routine mud checks and keep accurate records.
• Mix and handle mud chemicals and additives, ensuring proper storage and labeling.
• Track mud volumes and report any unexplained gains or losses.
• Operate and monitor mud‑system equipment including tanks, pumps, shakers, desanders, desilters, and centrifuges.
• Assist with treatment and conditioning of drilling fluids.
• Maintain equipment, report defects, and ensure housekeeping around the mud plant.
• Follow chemical handling, environmental, and HSE procedures.
• Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and emergency drills.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or HND in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering or related field (preferred).
• Relevant drilling‑fluids or mud‑engineering certification (advantageous).
• Previous experience working with drilling fluids on a rig.
• Knowledge of drilling‑fluid systems and well‑control principles.
• Valid offshore safety and medical certification where applicable.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.

Required skills

• Drilling fluid preparation and conditioning.
• Mud property analysis (density, viscosity, filtration, pH, solids).
• Operation of mud‑system equipment (tanks, pumps, shakers, desanders, desilters, centrifuges).
• Chemical mixing, handling, and storage.
• Accurate record‑keeping and reporting of mud data.
