Head of Business Development – Insurance (Abuja)

About the role

We are seeking a high‑caliber, strategic “hunter” to lead business development for our insurance portfolio in Abuja. The role combines revenue generation, market expansion and brand representation at the highest corporate level.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement strategies to increase premium income and profitability across corporate, SME, government and retail segments.
• Identify and pursue new business opportunities, build strategic partnerships with brokers, agents, financial institutions and corporate organisations, and lead negotiations to close high‑value insurance contracts.
• Expand the company’s presence in Abuja and other target markets.
• Design and execute comprehensive marketing plans, conduct market research, and manage branding, advertising and promotional campaigns.
• Set and monitor sales targets for the business development team, recruit, train and motivate sales executives, and develop incentive programmes.
• Collaborate with underwriting, actuarial and claims teams to create customer‑focused insurance products and support product launches.
• Contribute to strategic planning, prepare forecasts and revenue projections, and analyse performance to recommend growth initiatives.
• Produce regular performance reports and present updates to executive management using data analytics.

Required profile

• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in insurance business development, with at least 4 years in a managerial role.
• Proven track record of entering new market segments and securing high‑value corporate accounts.
• Strong negotiation and executive presentation skills with senior decision‑makers.
• Deep knowledge of insurance risk parameters, market dynamics and regulatory frameworks.
• Ability to mentor junior teams and collaborate with technical departments to fulfil client commitments.
