Civil Engineer

About the role

The Civil Engineer will join Build‑a‑School Initiative in Africa’s mission to create safe, well‑designed classrooms across Nigeria. Based in Abeokuta, this full‑time, on‑site position involves planning, designing, and overseeing the construction and rehabilitation of school buildings and related infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Develop engineering designs, drawings, and structural calculations for school facilities.
• Conduct site assessments, storm‑water management, drainage and grading studies.
• Collaborate with architects, construction teams, local authorities and community leaders to ensure compliance with Nigerian building codes and sustainability standards.
• Prepare project plans, schedules and monitor on‑site work quality and safety.
• Support cost estimation, procurement specifications and continuous improvement of design standards for diverse African environments.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field; professional licensure is a plus.
• Proven ability to produce safe, efficient, constructible designs for buildings and infrastructure.
• Experience working in multidisciplinary teams on construction projects.
• Knowledge of Nigerian and broader African building codes, safety regulations and infrastructure standards.
• Willingness to work on‑site in Abeokuta and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
