Head Nurse – General Medical & Surgical Services

About the role

The Head Nurse for General Medical & Surgical Services will lead nursing operations across Accident & Emergency, internal medicine and general wards, ensuring high‑quality, safe patient care. Reporting to the Director of Nursing, you will develop and implement nursing strategies, policies and standards to modernise clinical practice throughout the facility.

Key responsibilities

• Take ownership of nursing strategy budgets, allocate resources and ensure expenses are accounted for.
• Implement nursing policies and operating procedures for general medical services.
• Plan and oversee admission, nursing and patient‑care processes across A&E, internal medicine and general wards.
• Lead the development of nursing knowledge, ideas and best practices within the department.
• Monitor standards of care through regular audits and provide activity analysis reports for continuous improvement.
• Design and oversee the nursing strategic plan in line with regulatory bodies, corporate policies and local laws.
• Supervise investigations and complaints related to nursing incidents, ensuring proper documentation.
• Act as lead for Equality & Diversity, developing and implementing related policies and monitoring systems.
• Collaborate with HR on recruitment, retention, performance management and staff development.
• Communicate nursing operation updates to senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
