Deputy Head Design and Estimation (MEP)

About the role

An engineering and technical services company specialising in project execution and MEP systems for construction projects is hiring a Deputy Head of Design and Estimation in Lagos. The role oversees all company-wide MEP design development and material estimation, ensuring accurate, compliant and competitive technical submissions across projects.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee complete MEP designs, including HVAC (VRF systems and chilled water), plumbing and fire protection, in line with codes, standards and best practice.
• Lead materials estimation, quantity take-offs and value engineering to deliver competitive and accurate tenders.
• Coordinate with project ownership, commercial, procurement and delivery teams so designs are buildable and cost-effective.
• Review and approve design calculations, drawings, specifications and estimates before submission to clients, consultants or authorities.
• Use AutoCAD and other design and estimation software to produce high-quality drawings, layouts and documentation.
• Mentor design engineers and estimators and identify design risks in tender and pre-construction phases, developing mitigation strategies.
• Support contract negotiations with technical clarifications and value engineering proposals, and keep up with market trends and new technologies.

Required profile

• First degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, from a reputable institution.
• Minimum 6 years' proven experience in MEP design and estimation, with strong exposure to HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems.
• Demonstrated experience preparing detailed designs, technical calculations, BOQs and cost estimates for medium- to large-scale projects.
• Ability to independently design and estimate MEP systems, including full calculation packages and drawings.

Required skills

• Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD.
• Experience with other design and estimation software is an advantage.
