Consultant Neurologist

About the role

The Consultant Neurologist will lead the neurology service in a hospital setting, providing expert diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of neurological disorders. The role combines direct patient care, supervision of junior staff, teaching, research, and quality‑improvement activities.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive neurological assessments and develop evidence‑based treatment plans for conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, dementia, multiple sclerosis and neuroinfections.
• Order, perform and interpret neurodiagnostic studies (EEG, EMG, NCS, evoked potentials) and neuroimaging (CT, MRI, MRA, MRV) in collaboration with radiology.
• Provide acute stroke management, including thrombolysis, and handle neurological emergencies such as status epilepticus and raised intracranial pressure.
• Lead a team of junior doctors, residents and medical students, conduct performance evaluations and participate in on‑call rotas.
• Deliver bedside teaching, supervise trainees in procedures, and contribute to departmental audits, protocol development and clinical research.

Required profile

• Medical degree (MBBS/MD) with Board Certification in Neurology and a valid licence to practice in Nigeria.
• Minimum 5 years post‑fellowship experience in a high‑volume neurology unit.
• Proven expertise in neurodiagnostic testing and neuroimaging interpretation.
• Strong knowledge of national and international guidelines for stroke, epilepsy and other neurological conditions.
• Experience in teaching, quality‑improvement projects and peer‑reviewed research is highly desirable.
