Accountant – Finance Manager Support (Maiduguri, Nigeria)

About the role

The Accountant will support the Finance Manager in ensuring accurate bookkeeping, financial reporting, and compliance for FHI 360 UK‑Nigeria’s humanitarian projects in Borno State. This role involves coordinating finance activities across state offices and managing donor‑funded budgets.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain all project books of account, including checking accounts, equipment and supply registers.
• Assist in preparing monthly and annual financial reports, supporting sub‑project financial status and bank documentation.
• Monitor sub‑project budgets against approved work plans and produce periodic expenditure analyses.
• Process cash advances, petty cash, retirements and refunds, ensuring proper documentation.
• Prepare fiscal year budgets and enter them into FHI’s accounting software.
• Support audit reviews of country office and sub‑recipient reports for reimbursement.

Required profile

• BS/BA in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration (or MS/MA with fewer years of experience).
• Minimum 3–5 years of accounting experience in international development, preferably with USAID‑funded programs.
• Knowledge of local and donor contractual requirements, GAAP, budgeting and fiscal control.
• Ability to work independently, manage high‑volume workflow and travel at least 25%.
• High professionalism, integrity and strong analytical and report‑writing skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency with automated accounting software and database spreadsheets.
• Experience using Management Information Systems for financial reporting.
• Strong general‑ledger and budgeting capabilities.
