Medical Laboratory Scientist – Blood Banks

About the role

The Medical Laboratory Scientist – Blood Banks will perform a wide range of laboratory procedures focused on blood and blood products, ensuring safe transfusion practices and regulatory compliance within the African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja.

Key responsibilities

• Perform ABO and Rh typing, antibody screening, cross‑matching and investigate blood group discrepancies.
• Maintain optimal levels of blood products, monitor expiration dates, and ensure proper storage, labeling and documentation.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines (FDA, AABB, CAP), maintain accurate records and participate in quality assessments.
• Identify and resolve technical problems with equipment and reagents, providing expert recommendations to clinicians.
• Train new staff, conduct competency assessments and deliver continuing education sessions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science or Pathology (Master’s preferred).
• 1–4 years of experience in a blood bank setting.
• Certification as a Technologist or Specialist in Microbiology (advantage).
• In‑depth knowledge of blood bank principles, blood group systems and transfusion therapy.

Required skills

• ABO and Rh typing, antibody screening, cross‑matching.
• Blood component preparation and quality control testing.
• Use of Laboratory Information System (LIS) for documentation and reporting.
• Analytical and problem‑solving abilities in a laboratory environment.
