Legal Adviser – International Humanitarian Law

About the role

The Legal Adviser supports the ICRC Abuja Delegation in the national implementation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and related legal frameworks in Nigeria. The role combines legal analysis, advocacy, networking with government and academic actors, and the promotion of IHL education.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse national legal developments and advise on IHL, International Human Rights Law and other relevant frameworks.
• Monitor and report on the implementation of IHL and related treaties in Nigeria.
• Develop and follow up on strategies, objectives and action plans to address identified legal issues.
• Represent the delegation in meetings with ministries, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, NGOs, academic institutions and other partners.
• Provide legal advice and technical assistance to national authorities and support the drafting of domestic policies and regulations.
• Maintain and expand networks with government officials, scholars and IHL teachers, organising workshops, lectures and events to promote IHL education.

Required profile

• University degree in Law; a Master’s in Public International Law, IHL or Human Rights Law is an asset.
• At least three years of professional experience after graduation, preferably with exposure to IHL or human‑rights contexts.
• Strong motivation for humanitarian work and ability to work under pressure.
• Excellent command of English and a valid work permit for Nigeria.
